Perth set for historic visit by Greece’s Iconic Presidential Guards
October 28, 2022
For the first time in Western Australian history, ten members from the elite unit of the Hellenic Presidential Guard will visit Perth from the 1st to 7th November to commemorate Greece’s National “OHI Day” (pron: OCHI, which is Greek for “No”).
OHI Day, is commemorated every year on the 28th of October; it marks the day Greece declined an ultimatum to surrender to the Axis Powers, and thus entered World War Two on the side of the Allies.
The guards, known as Evzones (EV-zones, denoting the “well-girdled” fighter), leave millions of visitors each year fascinated and mesmerized with their distinctive uniforms and changing of the guard ceremony, while guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in central Athens around the clock, under any weather conditions.
The Evzones were established as an elite Unit of the Hellenic Army in 1868, but their roots date back 200 years ago, when Greece fought for independence against the Ottoman Empire.
While today they may be a purely ceremonial unit, serving as Guards of Honour of the President of the Republic, throughout the last two centuries of Modern Greek history, the Evzones have been a symbol of courage, bravery, and honour by all those who served their country.
All Evzones must stand at least 1.87 meters tall, are not permitted to move or speak while on duty and are volunteers drawn from the Hellenic Army’s Infantry Corps. They are chosen through a very demanding selection procedure, testing their ethos, as well as their mental and physical abilities.
During their stay in Perth, the Guards will visit several community organizations and schools within the Greek community of WA.
Of interest to the general public will be their procession along St George’s Terrace, followed by a flag raising ceremony outside Council House on Friday November 4 and their participation in a Wreath Laying Ceremony at Kings Park on Sunday November 6.
WA Premier, the Hon Mark McGowan MLA as well as the Lord Mayor of the City of Perth Basil Zempilas will also host functions to welcome the Evzones to Western Australia and to Perth.
The Greek Consul in Perth, Ms. Georgia Karasiotou encouraged all Western Australians to take the opportunity to see the Evzones in action.
“The visit is of high symbolism for the deep and longstanding friendship between our two countries, forged during wartime, when Greeks and Australians fought side by side for the shared values of freedom, justice and democracy. Greece is ever thankful to Australians having sacrificed their lives in the Battles of Mainland Greece and Crete during WWII.
This will be a unique experience for every person in WA. The Presidential Guards are a very recognizable icon of Greece, inspiring awe and admiration to Greeks and international visitors alike and to have them here in Perth is extremely fortunate” she said.
“It’s a great opportunity to see these guards up close and personal; for those who have never been to Greece, this is a small snippet of what they can experience when they do eventually go there” she added.
Media wishing to cover these events must register their interest by November 3.

Ethos launches media and PR campaign for new Donut Beer
April 28, 2022
A Western Australian brewery has taken the creative and socially conscious step of converting thousands of doughnuts into a delicious new craft beer, and in the process, will raise vitals funds to help feed hundreds of people across the state.
WATCH: As Reported on 9 News Perth
Mash Brewing, located in Perth’s Swan Valley region, has released a limited range of “Donut Beer” which has been specially brewed from 114 kilos of doughnuts.
The idea emerged after the brewery teamed up with Perth based sustainability start up “Donut Waste,” which focuses on reusing beer clips and recycling coffee grounds.
Head Brewer, Adrian Godwin said Mash Brewing jumped at the chance to play a role in generating a “circular economy” by preventing the unsold glazed, sprinkled and cookie doughnuts from going into landfill and in turn produce a “Pastry New England India Pale Ale”.
“I wanted to get involved from the moment the idea came about. I love brewing with different ingredients and the chance to brew more than two thousand doughnuts and see what happens was an opportunity to get creative” Mr Godwin said.
“We had a lot of fun in the process. We added a few hops as well to balance out the flavour, so when people ask me what it tastes like, the best way to describe it is like a tropical glazed doughnut.”
This isn’t the first time the former IT expert turned brewer has practiced alchemy with food, producing a limited-edition Christmas Pudding stout.
Mash Brewing will be donating 50-cents from each can of beer sold to OzHarvest WA allowing the national food charity to deliver an additional meal to someone in need.
State Manager of OzHarvest, Jennifer Keen said she was grateful to Mash Brewing for selecting the charity for this special release.
“All financial donations will assist us to meet the growing demand for food relief in our local community and to keep the wheels of our vans turning.”
“With eight yellow vans on the road, OzHarvest WA currently collects more than 110 tonnes of quality surplus food each month and delivers this good food, free of charge, to 150 local charities, schools and community groups across Perth and the greater metropolitan area to help those most at risk”.
“Donut Waste” founder Sharka Hornakova said Mash Brewing’s food rescue effort would play an important role in highlighting the whopping seven-point-six million tonnes of food which goes to landfill every year, even though 70-percent of it is perfectly edible.
“The cost of food waste to the Australian economy is around $37- billion dollars a year”.
“Food waste is a global challenge that has environmental, economic, and social impacts” Ms Hornakova said.
“Today’s effort by Mash Brewing will help achieve the Federal Government’s target of halving food waste in Australia by 2030” she added.
Mash Brewing’s new “Do-Nut Beer” can be bought at its Swan Valley venue and selected independent liquor stores from tomorrow.
On-premise sales of the beer can also be purchased at the brewery’s Bunbury venue from next week.
